I am Number Four

This is a movie that I never got around to watching in the cinema, but did want to. Since then I'd heard mixed reviews from friends. Some loved it, some said it was too much along the lines of the Twilight movies... all soppy romance and no action. I'm not really Twilight's biggest fan, so the prospect of it being anything like those movies put me off a fair bit. Anyways, mom and I got take-aways for dinner last night and so I thought I'd pop into the video store next door. The DVD was in the corner that I usually frequent, you know that one, the lastest releases corner, every video store has one. I looked at it, scanned the rest of the shelves to see if there was anything better, and ended up taking it.

Ok, so the movie...

Alex Pettyfer (John Smith) was very much under my radar until I watched Beastly. He's not a bad actor at all. Look, he's no Nicholas Cage or Sean Connery, but as far as the young, up and coming actors go, he's definitely one to watch.

Ok, so John Smith and 8 other kids are from another planet, Lorien, which was destroyed by another race of aliens called the Mogadorians. These kids were all referred to by a number. As the other "Numbers" were killed off John grew stronger and came into a set of powers called Legacies. Each child apparently has different Legacies. He is guarded by a Cêpan (warrior) called Henri (Timothy Olyphant).

Stepping away from the movie a second here, does anyone else think that Timothy Olyphant is just the most delicious thing we have seen on the big screen in a very long time? At the ripe old age of 42 (born in 1968), the saying "men get better looking with age" certainly applies to him.

Ok, back to the movie... Look, I've no interest in running through it play-by-play. I'm not a movie reviewer, I'm just here to tell you that you should watch the movie. Yes, it does have a bit of a love story attached to it, but that's ok. It's not a soppy, gooey movie like the dismal Twilights.

The action scenes in the movie were fun! And well, any movie that has a Chimera in it will already earn 10 brownie points in my life. How cool was Bernie? Unfortunately Google is not offering up a decent image of him in his Chimera form for me to post.

Another great reason to watch the movie (especially if you're a guy) is the very awesome Australian, Six (Teresa Palmer). This girl is HAWT. Her Legacies include*:

Telekinesis — Like John, she can move objects with her mind. It is not told how developed her strength is.

Invisibility — Six can make herself invisible. She manages to sneak around outside the school despite the numerous Mogadorians outside. Six can turn people invisible just by touching them; however, this is limited to only a couple of people. John's grandfather had this power.

Elemental Manipulation — Six can control the four basic elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. She can apparently mix these powers together, shown when she makes a storm appear in the final fight.

Ok, well that's all I have time for today. The movie is definitely worth a watch, and I'm going to see if I can get the books too. I think they'd make a great read. I'm off to spin poi with my boy :P

Movie Night! – Green Lantern

I don’t know about anyone else who went to see this, but I thoroughly enjoyed Green Lantern. Of course, I am a fan of just about all of the comic book based movies, so it’s probably not the best idea to go on my opinion of this kind of movie.

I have to say, Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordon is NOT unpleasant… Green spandex seems to suit the man quite well.

There were a couple of spots in the movie where I was thinking that they could have done without them, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Anyways, I give the movie a 7/10. It needed a little more action and a little less romance, but otherwise it was great :)

TRON Legacy

Saw it and loved it! But it could have had a bit more 3D in the 3D :P

Will post some thoughts on it another time.

Apparently, it's going to be brilliant, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced. Is it worth a watch?

The Rebound

Oh gosh, I’ve just finished watching The Rebound and I’m in tears! Good tears though. What a great movie. It was funny, entertaining, happy in the right places and sad in the right places. It was also uplifting, especially for someone like me who is never really sure if happy endings have a place in the world anymore. I think I’m going to buy this one on DVD.

I really shouldn’t post on this thing when I’m feeling like this.

Today has been a disappointing day all round. Estate agents are coming to look at our flat tomorrow. The owner is selling, which means that we’re going to end up moving. Sadly we can’t afford to buy it ourselves.

I had a meeting with Darren this afternoon, which was postponed. I actually feel sick from the anticipation of that meeting and the disappointment of it not happening. My stomach feels like it’s turning over itself and no amount of Rescue drops seems to be helping. Noelle said (and let me assure you that this is not a comforting thought) that it takes half the amount of time to get over someone that you spent going out with them. That translates to 2.5 months of feeling like this... This. Yuck.

Coffee with Noelle last night was enjoyable. It’s always good to catch up with her, although it ended up being an earlier night than I had expected. I just shut down. Well, my brain shut down and I literally ran out of things to say. I suppose I’m not the witty, communicative, intelligent individual that I like to believe I am... or at least, not when it matters.

Her solution to the whole relationship thing seems to be, in order to get over one you need to replace it with another. I just don’t know if I can do that. The thought of dating someone else is making me more ill. Darren is perfection in every way. How do you replace that? Gosh... it’s actually a very frightening thought.

Anyways, before I end up in another set of melodramatic tears let me change the subject.

Movies! Monday is both a public holiday and movie day with mom. We’re going to watch Alice in Wonderland. Noelle didn’t rate it very highly, but then some people loved it and some people hated it. I suppose it all depends on how well you know the books and how much of a Lewis Carroll fan you are. I’ve never actually read the entire Alice in Wonderland book, which I suppose I’ll correct at some point. This means, however, that my expectations are minimal and inevitably I will end up enjoying the movie.

In other news, I’m loving the this season of So You Think You Can Dance.

So You Think You Can Dance is an American dance competition and reality show that airs on Fox in the United States.


The series first premiered on July 20, 2005 and has a similar premise to the American Idol series of singing competitions, with nationwide auditions leading to the discovery of the next big star. The show was created by Idol's Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and is produced by 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions. A mixture of contestants are chosen for the show, ranging from unknown street dancers to winners of national championships. All contestants have to work their way through a rigorous audition process. By the end of this process, 20 dancers of various styles are chosen to compete on national television. Over the course of the show, dancers are assigned different dance styles and partners each week to test their versatility.

It’s really my favourite thing to watch on TV these days.

The Book of Eli

I actually have no idea where to begin with this movie. The last 10 minutes was the highlight of the movie. The Book of Eli wasn't a terrible movie, and it certainly had moments of greatness (like the last 10 minutes) but overall I think my life would have been just as fulfilled if I hadn't gone to see it.

Denzel Washington, as always, was phenomenal. I think he alone saved that movie. His quiet, almost prophet-like, manner in the movie was excellent.

I don’t really have much more than that to say about the movie. The comical cannibalistic granny and grandpa was, I think, the knife in the coffin for me. The rest of the movie was still bearable, but granny and grandpa, with their graveyard in the backyard and their “meat” in the kitchen… they just didn’t belong in there.

I’m not even going to attempt to rate this one, but I will offer this as a word of advice… if you’re into high action, high impact movies like I am, give this one a miss.
