And speaking of pretty things...

Megan (of Starbright Girl) has been hard at work getting ready for the I Heart Market this weekend. Her African Flora Hearts range of pendants is gorgeous.

I know I'm going to sound like an advertisment for Megan, but you can get her to custom make you a pendant.

Check out Megan's Starbright Girl blog.

I love pretty things…

And what is prettier than local, handmade jewellery?
I have one whole follower; a follower who happens to be local and makes very pretty jewellery.

I’d class her (forgive me Thula if you are a boy, but I’m going to assume you’re a girl. Feel free to correct me!) jewellery as elegant and contemporary with a hint of vintage. Her designs are uncomplicated and look like they’re easy to wear with just about anything. A very pretty blog, with some very pretty jewellery.

Have a look at Thula’s blog.

And of course there’s always the Shongweni Market every Saturday morning.
So you see folks, there is always something to do in Durbz, you just have to know where to look! :)

Oh, and this is where I'm heading on Sunday... The East Coast Radio House and Garden Show.

Movie Night! – Green Lantern

I don’t know about anyone else who went to see this, but I thoroughly enjoyed Green Lantern. Of course, I am a fan of just about all of the comic book based movies, so it’s probably not the best idea to go on my opinion of this kind of movie.

I have to say, Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordon is NOT unpleasant… Green spandex seems to suit the man quite well.

There were a couple of spots in the movie where I was thinking that they could have done without them, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Anyways, I give the movie a 7/10. It needed a little more action and a little less romance, but otherwise it was great :)

Fire and Fun :)

It’s our fortnightly jaunt to Fire in the Park tonight!
This is an event that I really look forward to. Granted it is going to be SO cold, but at least we have fire and friends (and I have a snuggie) to keep us warm.

I forgot the purple beast (aka my picnic blanket) at home, so I missioned to Makro at lunch time to get another one. The new one is blue... Will have to come up with a new name for it.

I’ve also, for a change, remembered to bring my camera with. I have no idea whether or not the battery is charged, so here’s hoping that it is. If all goes well, I should have a few more pictures to show you tomorrow or the next day. Hopefully I will manage to get a picture or two of the drummers and with any luck, I’ll get someone to take a photo of me spinning something. I’m taking two sets of sock poi, plus fire poi and my flowlights.

On a completely random sidenote… Baz sent this to me today. You have to watch it with sound, otherwise it’s very arb. Honey Badgers Are So Gangsta.

Enjoy the evening all!

Spaceinbetween Design

Yes, I know... strange name, but as it so often happens great things come with strange names... like Nologo Studios, Linkin Park, Facebook, Blogger, Strudel, etc... You get where I'm going with this.

Spaceinbetween (space in between) is the company that my cousin George owns. He is and actually always has been naturally gifted in design both graphic and structural. At the moment he is producing some of the most exquisite works of art... everything from sleek metal tables that look like they should be featured in a movie set in space and beautifully designed mosaic walls, to statues and works of art which are designed to add colour and vibrance to your home.

He is truly amazing. It looks like the Spaceinbetween website is currently getting a facelift, but you can check out his superb works of art on his Facebook page.

Time for a proper catch-up

Yes in-dee-dee...
I was having a read through my blog today and there are HUGE gaps missing, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to have a bit of a life catch-up.

Work:
Work is going well. I went on a Social Networking conference a couple of weeks back, which I really enjoyed. It was hosted by Mark Sham. Interesting guy… dynamic, funny, intelligent… I’m definitely up for another of his conferences if he makes his way to Durban again. He’s given me a new outlook on social media in general; particularly Twitter and Facebook. I’m going to use those two, combined with a blog to change the way we communicate with our clients and prospective clients. I’m hoping that by opening a two-way communication channel we’ll begin to drive traffic to our website and at the same time show people (prospective clients) the value in the products and services that we offer.

Today I spent my day putting together a specification document for a timekeeping application. I’m tired of Excel and fighting with adding up my time. It’s painfully time consuming and dismally boring. I’ve actually given up with the whole timekeeping thing until I can find a better, more intelligent solution. Tomorrow I’ll finish up the spec and send it off to Darren for a quote.

Barry (my IT guy) and I have reached a weird plain of friendship; although, he is the worst hugger I have ever come across and I have zero desire to ever touch the man again. I always smile when I open my Outlook and there is a completely random, non-work related email in there from him. They are usually strange and entertaining and have a way of making me laugh in that kind of cynical “Oh Baz, what have you done now” kind of way. He is Annie’s kryptonite. The other day he was working out if the iPad was 11 inches, using his penis as a guide. All I heard coming from Annie was “I’m sorry; I so did not need to see that in my lifetime.” I giggled… a lot. Obviously his penis was inside his pants, but the motion of hand to iPad, then to crotch, back to iPad was a little much for our country girl. The two of them provide hours of entertainment for our little office.

Maryla is on leave at the moment. The very lucky bean is frolicking around Paris and Euro Disney with her son, Janek. I have to say that I am horribly jealous.

Hobbies:
Ok, enough about work…
My hobbies were starting to get the better of me, so I’ve decided to can a couple and focus on the ones that are important to me. I’m still beading and mosaicing, but not often. I started belly dancing and lasted two classes. It’s really… REALLY not for me. Flamenco yes, belly dancing no.

I’m enjoying Flamenco again. It’s school holidays now which means that there aren’t any classes and won’t be again until the 20th of July. Gosh, a whole month without class. Seems a little strange, but it will probably do me some good to chillax.

Poi is going well still, although I seem to have come to a bit of a grinding halt in terms of progression. I’ve learned a good few moves, but am struggling to find someone to help me move gracefully when spinning… Actually, part of the reason that I took up belly dancing was because the teacher said that she could teach Robyn and I to flow… meh, it didn’t work out. Martin has been an amazing help, but I’m stuck at the moment and am getting frustrated with it as a result. I am spinning fire these days, fairly comfortably. I also have the most awesome sets of flowlights. The colours are pretty… Mom bought me a set of limited edition watermelon-coloured flowlights, but I am only getting those for Christmas.

From left to right - Water; Earth; Spirit
Work-type Hobbies:
Yeah, I know… I always have these.
I’ve been helping friends get their websites sorted and as a result have been neglecting my own. I will, hopefully by the end of the year, have sorted out my own website. Although, to be honest, the website isn’t going to make me any money so it really is going to be an added expense a month for pure indulgence, so I do have to think about whether or not I really want to be putting it up.

Martin’s website was the first of the two projects that I have been working on.
I’m completely stoked with the way that it has come out, although I’m not totally stoked with the copy… but that’s not up to me. I sorted out the design; he can sort out what he wants to tell people and how he’s going to get the message across. Have a look at his website and let me know what you think.

The other website, which is a monster of a project is a re-design of Fire and Lights; Robyn’s performer portal. The poor chicken really needed some help with this one. I get the concept of what she’s trying to achieve, and it’s a phenomenally good one, but the execution of it leaves much to be desired. I don’t blame her though; she’s not a designer and she’s not a developer. She has to try getting her concept across as much as possible and hoping that the professionals that are building the site for her understand her and translate her thoughts into something amazing. They didn’t and as a result her portal is boring, full of bugs and difficult to use. I’ve give the design and the home page a complete overhaul. Check it out :)

Fire and Lights home new page
I’ve also given a couple of the other pages on the site a bit of a rethink and have come up with, what I think is, a good base to start with. Hopefully her developers will be able to expand on that… Hopefully. I’ve also started a blog for Fire and Lights. If I can just get Robyn to sort out the first post I’ll be able to get it going. It is her blog in the end, so I want her to have the first say in it.

Once Fire and Lights is up and running we’re going to sort out the Beads and Beyond website. Then she should be pretty much sorted and it will be just a case of updating them.

Personal Stuff:
Life has been strange in this regard… strange, but really good. Wayne and I seem to really gel. At first I wasn’t sure, but the more time I spend with him, the more I enjoy spending time with him and the more I want to spend time with him.

Ok, here’s the story of how we met… or at least, my version of what I can remember. You know I’m useless with details, so bear with me.

Mom had started mentioning about this guy at her office called Wayne. She would say “He’s a sweet boy… Odd… But sweet.” She told me that he loves to swim in the sea, plays violin and makes music. Kind of odd for someone who works in Fixed Assets at Toyota, but anyways… she did say he was “an odd boy.” Anyways, the “odd boy” turned out to be a 31 year old man who sent me a friend request on Facebook one fateful day. Now bear in mind that I knew of Wayne, but neither he nor I had ever laid eyes on the other, let alone said a word to each other, so needless to say I was curious as to why I was getting a friend request from someone who really didn’t know me from a bar of soap. I called mom… She said, in only the way mom can, “Buggie, I was telling Wayne that I need a son-in-law.” At this point I cringed and with long teeth accepted the friend request. Mom was right, he is odd, but in a really great way. He’s different from the other men I’ve had in my life in that he is genuinely loving, endlessly patient and puts up with me and all of my shit. In my defence, I did tell him that I was a difficult person… stubborn, set in my ways, uncomfortable in my own skin sometimes… all of which he has completely taken in his stride. He’s amazing. He wanted to go out right off the mark, but I was like “no” … I’ve been down that road too many times, but two months down the line I got an sms to say (again short version) that he wanted to know where he stood in my life and that I kinda needed to start making some decisions about us. I told him that I would take him seriously and go out with him, but at the same time he needed to take me seriously and make a rather huge life decision. I told him that I was tired of playing relationship games and that he had to make the decision there and then to marry me within two years or he must go away. At this point I can hear you going WTF Ash??? Don’t worry I was as surprised as you are now when he said yes that is his intention. Two days away from our one monthaversary he said to me “Do you realise that I’m completely and madly in love with you?” My heart felt like it had come home. Look, it may be famous last words as we all know that I am dismally useless at relationships, but I think (I even kinda know) that this is my guy for now and for the rest of time, and that fills me with a warm and fuzzy happiness.

Ok, moving on…
I’ve been reading this web-comic called the Seraph Inn. It’s really sweet. The story can get a little lost at times, but in general it’s sweet. Martin introduced me to it. That bean is a wealth of strange internet stuff… at the ripe old age of 24.

And dear heavens we’re on page 3 of the word document, so I guess it’s time to end this one off. Mark needs to update his blog so I think I’m going to go poke him into doing just that.

Have a great evening
x

Martin's site... it LIVES!

I had a hand in creating the design of this website, so I'm beyond stoked that he's got it up and running.
Check out his awesome website here!!!

If you're looking for a performance artist for your function, from birthday parties to weddings, he is your guy. He does all sorts of nifty things including juggling, fire dancing (of which he is epically awesome at), unicycling and a whole bunch more.

Check out his website!

Just a lovely day :)

This is going to come as a surprise, considering that I have simply NOT kept my blog up to date, but today is Wayne and my one "monthaversary". We've been going out for one whole month!

I suppose you're asking yourself who is Wayne now? Wayne really fell into my life when I thought that I was doomed to be single for forever. He works at Toyota and knows my mom, which is how he ended up in my life. Mom, being mom, often talks about me... What she's saying half the time, I have no idea, but it can't be all bad because one fateful day Wayne decided to add me to his Facebook friends list. It's a relatively involved story from there, but the short version is that after two months of hanging out and seeing each other on and off, he sent me an sms saying (again, short version)... What are we doing now?

Fast forward to one month later...

We are happily dating :) He's such a great bean.

Hello hi Elsa Pie

You're the only person that reads this thing, so I thought I'd pop you a quick life update. :)

Life is crazy busy at the moment. I've spent my last two Sundays at work; awesome huh? I think I may also go into the office tomorrow to do a bit more of a catch-up. Our server... wait for it... is getting a format and reinstall, as well as ALL of the computers. Barry has decided to start from scratch, because there are just too many issues happening with the current network set-up. SO the next couple of weeks are going to be... interesting.

How are you enjoying your new job? I laughed so hard when you said that your computer broke on your first day. I hope you're enjoying it at least, and enjoying the very corporate life.

Annie seems to be working out well, although she is very young and very much not used to a full working day :P She'll get into the swing of it though. Her kryptonite is sex the way yours is bums :P Katia, Annie and I were having the most random conversation about brazilian waxes and men shaving their pubes the other day and the most awful thought popped into my head. I wanted to tell Katia "wait til you get your first pube wedged into your teeth, you will be thankful I told you that men should shave" ... but, amazingly my brain kicked in before that could come out of my mouth. Annie would have dropped dead! :P

Speaking of men shaving... Elsa, life has gotten so weird.
Let's start with the simple stuff... Jayson has run away altogether. He deleted me from his friends list on FB and has just run away. I'm not going to chase after him. I'm just not. My life is complicated enough without me running after a man who isn't interested enough in me to keep me as a friend on Facebook.
Here's the complicated stuff... Darren. Actually, on second thought, I can't post this online. And I told you that I resigned from being Barry's online stalker right? He actually called me to tell me that he was sad. Why is it that my life is always full of strange men? I still sms him though, and get the most random and fun answers back.

Poi is so much fun! I'm loving it! It's getting hard though, but I guess it will get easier when I know what heck I'm doing. Faith has baled on lessons... Actually, Faith has resigned! I'm sad :(

I joined a really great poi forum on Home of Poi, and have learned quite a bit and met a nice guy (not romantically - he's 24 and has a gf). But it's nice to meet other poi spinners outside of Robyn's circle. He lives North KZN/Zululand way.

Anyways my friend that's all I have the brain power for this evening.
Missing you and your craziness. :)

xx

TRON Legacy

Saw it and loved it! But it could have had a bit more 3D in the 3D :P
Will post some thoughts on it another time.

I got a new baby...

Isn't she beautiful?

It's been a while...

How often do I say that? It has been a while... 2010 is over, 2011 is in full swing, and I had the holiday of a lifetime in between.

Elsa mentioned the other week that I hadn't updated this thing in ages, so I thought I'd best. Although, this is going to be a "quickie".

So I started my holiday with having nothing to do and ended up getting a hug that I've been waiting 6 years for... Who says I'm impatient? :P It's a bit of a long story, and now isn't the time to put it all into words. My brain is tired. I did get some sun on the ONE weekend that we haven't had rain. Actually, I got fried by the sun. That's what I get for being a dumbass and going out without sunscreen. I'll post more photies and my holiday update soon :) In the meantime... here I am!

Jay & Ash, or Ash & Jay's photography challenges :)

Jay and I are taking a photo a weekend. So far we've had "Tree" and "Colour". I'm not over-joyed with my tree photograph, but I like my colour submission. Check it out...

Canon Ixus 105 - Photies

A few test photies :)

My latest gadget...

Is this little shnungie... Yes, in silver :)
It's the Canon Ixus 105 - 12.1mp point-and-click. I got it from ORMS in Cape Town via their website. That is one great store. I ordered the camera and a memory card at about 3:30pm, and it arrived at my office by 10am the next day. Thank you to Shawn at ORMS for being so flipping efficient!

The Facebook movie...
Apparently, it's going to be brilliant, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced. Is it worth a watch?

Familia Flamenco

Linda Vargas and Demi Fernandez
What a great show! Katia and I went, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The dancers were amazing; Linda, as always, was outstanding and Demi was his usual guitar genius self. I’m sorry the show finished today, and I’m sorry that I booked tickets on the last day as I would have actually like to watch it again. It has re-inspired me to carry on Flamenco, which to be honest I was ready to give up last week. It was just fantastic.

Ok… A practice I will go… Rosa Maria (the dance), I will conquer you yet!

A quick life update…

My lack of posts over the past couple of months should be an indication of how my life is going, although not quite where my life is going.

Work is beginning to consume my life, to the point that I’m beginning to miss the odd dance class and the odd appointment. This is going to come to an end though, as I’m going to start forcing myself into a routine of leaving at 5:00 on the dot. Most of the people in the office leave at 4:30…
Leaving work late every night is not conducive to creating a happier, healthier me; which is why I left Evil Corp. to begin with.

Dancing has become a bit of a chore, but I do think that this is due to the fact that I’m over-tired by Wednesday evening and really just want to head home. I actually had a small emotional breakdown last week at dancing and ended up leaving half way through. It (“it” being my life) all just became a bit too much and as a result I just felt completely overwhelmed while trying to learn a new, but basic, step to finish off the dance that we are learning. Anyways, this week there isn’t a class as the school holidays have kicked in so I will get a chance to leave early (or rather on time) and head home to relax for the evening.

“Home” is a stressful environment at this point, and actually has been since my grandfather moved in with us. He has, however, decided to move out again. I think that my mother’s constant misery has finally gotten to him. He’s moving back to the Eastern Cape, although where exactly I am not sure. My mother drilled him on it on Sunday morning, but I don’t know what the outcome of that conversation was as I opted to avoid any inevitable conflict and go shower.

My mother is another story altogether. She and I went to Gateway a couple of weeks (or three, I’m not sure) back and, as always, ended up having an argument about her stupid boyfriend. He really is the human equivalent of Septicemia… Septicemia is a revolting bacterium that spreads throughout your body and destroys your life. He has done nothing but destroy our lives since he came into them. I take heart in the fact that “the wheel turns”. Anyways, back to my original story… we had an argument and as a result both ended up in tears in Gateway when she literally tossed at me the fact that she has had a heart-attack because she is stressed. Actually, she had a heart-attack because her blood pressure and her cholesterol are through the roof, but she won’t do anything about them. Look, she is on medication for both, but quite frankly, unless she changes her eating habits and gets some exercise in her life she’s not going to get any better and, as a result, another heart-attack will definitely be on the cards. What grates me to the bone is that she didn’t tell me when it happened, but instead waited until we were arguing to throw it in my face. I can’t tell you the level of anger I feel towards her and have felt towards her since that day.

This has all motivated me to begin sorting out my life. I’m saving now… hard. I want to move out and the only way I’m going to do that is if I get my finances under control and save for the furniture and appliances I’m going to need when I move, as well as the first month of double rent.

Anyways, enough about my mother…

Jason… Well, I’ve put him and whatever could have happened between us on hold for now. Not indefinitely, just for now. I think that at this point in my life trying to start anything with anyone would be a disaster. I’m not in a happy place and I can’t rely on someone else to be my happiness for me, so I need to find my “inner zen” before I can begin a new relationship. Moving out will help with that. As a result of that though, I cancelled our weekend away. I am sad about that, but everything happens for a reason and I guess that this is just one of those things that needed to happen, even though it’s not the best thing to have done.

That’s my life in a nutshell at this point. I’m also doing the odd bit of beading and making the odd pieces of jewellery, but I’ve not really gotten much further with it than that.

And that’s me for now…
x
